Spring Carnival Sunday September 13 2009 Norlane Waterworld
Although Geelong no longer runs the old “Springding” carnival, the Geelong Underwater Hockey League recently hosted a regional competition for players from throughout Victoria. Keen players travelled from Horsham, Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Melbourne to enjoy a social competition and a chance to consider players for the Victorian U18 team for the coming National Championships.
Five hopefully even teams battled it out underwater, in rather murky conditions to decide the best team on the day.
The Dolphins, comprising; Steve Dunn, Ray Watts, Matt Sweeney, Mark Dye, Russell George, James Susic, James Kirkland and Tom Lever, finished ahead on points, closely followed by the Skates comprising; Steven Taylor, Stuart McCallum, Phil Ackermans, Mauro Maiorca, Trier Tsui Nam Lau, Andrew Hunt, Tim Ogden, Natalia Joordens and Michael Peel.
Winners of the Most Valuable Player Awards were:
Men: Matthew Sweeney
Women: Camille White
U18 Male: Michael Richards
U18 Female: Natalia Joordens.

Monash Invitational Competition - July 26th
Posted July 29, 2009
Monash Underwater Hockey recently hosted a social mixed competition at the Clayton Campus.
The idea of the day was to give players of mixed abilities and different clubs the opportunity to play together in a competition environment !
With forty plus players, 4 teams were picked with the same number of women, men, beginners and juniors in each team. Players game from all across the state including Geelong, Wonthaggi, Bairsndale and Horsham !
For many people it was their first game for quite a while, Richie Rowe and Belinda Watts returned to the underwater hockey after welcoming new additions to their families ! For others like Slava and Mauro it was the first competition !
The teams were very even and a double round robin gave everyone the chance to make amends for any first round losses ! The scores were very close in every game and as the draw unfolded it was clear that the fight for First Place was between team three (Michaela's team and team Four Chooky' s team). With team Four having won every game in the round first round they started the second round on top ! This was short lived as team three staged a come back after a some what disorganized start to the day ! They were able to beat team three and share the lead. The next game as Team Four fold under the pressure and draw to Camille's team which would come back to haunt them later !
The overall results came down to the last game where Team three had to win the game in order to place Ist on the ladder. After a closely contested game and a fantastic goal by scored by old cougar John Weiss team three emerged the winners of the day, winning the final game 1-0.
There were awards for most determined in the categories of Women, Men, Juniors and Novice players. The Women's award was closely contested but went to World Champion Eden Brown(Monash), Men's- Dave Mc Phee(Wonthaggi), Juniors a great performance by Tim Ogden (Wonthaggi) and the Novice award to new Monash player Slava. The highest goal scorer of the day was Alec Jonstone also of Monash Club with four goals !
Players enjoyed the day and celebrated at the end of the day with a dinner at Ilmondo's Pasta bar. It was fantastic to see everyone again and we hope to host a similar event in the near future !
It will be the last comp. for Rees for a while as he and Amy head of to Cambodia for a work / holiday stint ! We wish them well on their travels and hope to see them return safely with many happy stories to share . Can I take this opportunity to thanks Rees for all the hard work that he has done for the VUHC, we appreciate it !!
Until then enjoy your hockey !
