Nationals Report, January 2010, Hobart

Vic women's team at the Hobart nationals January 2010

Posted April 6, 2010

Well we had a great competition at Nationals in Hobart this year, fielding teams in the men's, women's and juniors. Grades.

Hobart is a great venue with excellent playing surface and a fantastic court sizes. The competition was fierce in all categories; the men played a single round robin and finals, whilst the women and juniors played a double round robin plus finals which totaled 10 games for the women!! Exhausting!

The round robin games were closely contested so there was no room for complacency or being off your game.

All three teams made the finals which was a great achievement.

The men played off for the bronze medal against Queensland in a thrilling contest which saw multiple kick outs and in pool drama in the dying seconds of the game. Tied at three goals a piece Queensland with only minutes to go missed a penalty goal through a breaking infringement. The VIC men missing two players in the sin bin managed to regain possession and score the winning goal in the dying seconds of the game.

The women had a very successful campaign after an opening blinder in the round robin against Tasmania where they scored 10 goals to O. The girls carefully made their way through the double round robin showing their superior fitness and team work.

Only losing one game out of eight in the round robin, they beat Tasmania 3-0 in the elimination final to be faced with their recent arch rivals NSW(third year in a row) in the grand final.

The grand final started off a little slow for the VIC girls with NSW getting the upper hand and showing great strength as they steamed rolled down the pool .Despite this the game felt well within reach and the girls kept cool heads and continued to plug away at their game plan, which was to create space and release key running forwards. We scored a goal before half time to finish at the break 2-1 down.

The fun was just beginning and the girls seemed to be gaining confidence and forward momentum. It was a great display of teamwork as every team member made pivotal contribution to the turn around.

The backs worked tirelessly to stop any more advances to the goal trays and were able to break through the opposition and start releasing a running forwards. Camille put her stamp on the game with some great drives and aggression on the puck which was expertly capitalised on by our key experienced players Belinda and Tania. who weaved there magic through the opposition, We scored 4 goals in the second half to finish the game on a high winning 5-2.

Awesome effort to all girls who played super in this game and the whole tournament, special congratulations to Catherine on joining her first VIC team with a win in the final! A special thanks to Tania for flying across the world to be with us, you were inspiring to watch and a machine in the pool!

The juniors also had a good round robin, but games were very tight and challenging as Tasmania A seemed to have a very imposing team.

The juniors made the final and were determined to give Tasmania a run for their money. Although at times Vic looked threatening they were over run in the end by a stronger more experienced team. The finals score being 6 - 2.

A big thank you to the coaches Juniors - Dave Mc Phee and Wolfie, Women- Chooky and Eden and to the Men - Dave Barry, we can't do it without you guys being such great contributers to the sport !

A very special thanks to Russell Ogden who chaperoned our Juniors and did a fantastic job! We are very appreciative of the time you gave up to help us with our juniors !

Good luck to those players who have been selected to play in the Australian teams they include, Belle, Camille, Chooky (women), Cassi, Bryney, Nick , Russell and Callum Wishart (juniors!).

Geelong UWH Club Invitational Competition - Results

Posted September 14, 2009

Spring Carnival Sunday September 13 2009 Norlane Waterworld

Although Geelong no longer runs the old “Springding” carnival, the Geelong Underwater Hockey League recently hosted a regional competition for players from throughout Victoria. Keen players travelled from Horsham, Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Melbourne to enjoy a social competition and a chance to consider players for the Victorian U18 team for the coming National Championships.

Five hopefully even teams battled it out underwater, in rather murky conditions to decide the best team on the day.

The Dolphins, comprising; Steve Dunn, Ray Watts, Matt Sweeney, Mark Dye, Russell George, James Susic, James Kirkland and Tom Lever, finished ahead on points, closely followed by the Skates comprising; Steven Taylor, Stuart McCallum, Phil Ackermans, Mauro Maiorca, Trier Tsui Nam Lau, Andrew Hunt, Tim Ogden, Natalia Joordens and Michael Peel.

Winners of the Most Valuable Player Awards were:

Men: Matthew Sweeney

Women: Camille White

U18 Male: Michael Richards

U18 Female: Natalia Joordens.
